Governor Neil Abercrombie will headline a celebration hosted by The Michaels Development Company and Interstate Realty Management recognizing the achievements of four Towers of Kuhio Park residents who have been awarded 2012 scholarships from The Michaels Organization Educational Foundation.

The Michaels Development Company, along with The Vitus Group, and the Hawaii Public Housing Authority, is leading the redevelopment and revitalization of Kuhio Park Terrace (KPT), Hawaii’s largest public housing community.

The $332 million revitalization of KPT, to be completed over the next 10 years, includes the substantial renovation of two high-rise towers as well as the new construction of low-rise family units. The revitalized KPT community will serve families with a wide variety of incomes by offering public housing, Section 8, Low Income Housing Tax Credit, and market-rate rental units. Michaels’ sister company, Interstate Realty Management, is providing property and asset management services to KPT, as well as collaborating with local nonprofit organizations to expand supportive services to its residents. Both Michaels Development Company and Interstate Realty Management are part of The Michaels Organization, a family of companies dedicated to excellence in affordable, mixed income, student, and military housing.

The Michaels Organization Educational Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of The Michaels Organization, has been offering scholarships to residents of Michaels’ owned and managed properties since 1991. Award recipients are traditional and non-traditional students who have achieved academic scholarship and been accepted to an accredited college, university, or vocational training program.

The four scholars who will be recognized at the August 16 ceremony are the first residents of KPT to apply for the program, and will receive a total of $10,000 in educational grants. Since its founding in 1991, The Michaels Organization Educational Foundation has awarded $3.1 million in grants, benefitting more than 1500 students. All contributions to the scholarship foundation come from private donations and are matched 2-for-1 by The Michaels Organization’s Chairman and CEO, Michael J. Levitt and his wife Patricia Levitt.
