Author Chet Pointer further expands the parallel universes of Asimov, Clarke and Heinlein in The Witch’s Rain, a solidly constructed novel that is both worthy of readers’ attention and admiration. Lending a modern voice to the science fiction genre by throwing in a hint of thriller in this immensely entertaining work, Pointer has crafted a surefire page-turner.
Set in a futuristic backdrop of a planet ruled by an ancient royal family, The Witch’s Rain centers on Larin, a government assassin, who is given one last target on his home planet– a woman leader named Jaquin who is uniting all of the interplanetary clans. Detu, the Royal Security Director, also orders Larin to retrieve the stolen plans of a mass destruction weapon, that of a nuclear Implosion Device capable of wiping out the planets. The stolen plans have been traced but there were very few clues for Larin to follow.
About to set out on his last mission, Larin realizes that he’s been tricked and Detu left out one important detail— the technical plans will be recovered over his dead body. Realizing his fate, Larin still heads on for his home world, not to complete his mission but to disappear. His plan may look so simple but as a hunted assassin plagued with hallucinations of his haunted past, it looks like it won’t be an easy homecoming after all.
Irresistibly readable, The Witch’s Rain is certainly a result of Pointer’s deftness in language and a blazing imagination. Readers shall find themselves embroiled in between interplanetary clans and the brewing emotions of a man who never knew of his past – a man who might just change the course of an entire solar system’s fate. Nothing short of brilliant shall be expected from The Witch’s Rain.
