Nearly three in five (59%) of polled adults stop to chat whenever they see their neighbours and close to a third of adults would also be willing to lend their car to their neighbour.

With the Olympics now at a close, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee a distant memory, the UK – and in particular London – has had a monumental 2012. Such events have brought people closer together; indeed recent research from WhipCar.com, the UK’s neighbour-to-neighbour car rental service, suggests we are living in an age where neighbours are becoming good friends all across the country.
A study of 2,012 adults from across the UK found that 77% of Britons talk to their neighbours at least once a week, and more than a quarter want to get to know their immediate neighbours better. Figures varied strongly between regions, with only 9% of Northern Irish neighbours wanting to make the effort to get to know their neighbours better; compared to 29% in Wales and as much as a third in London.
Just a year on from the biggest riots the city has seen in decades, Londoners are actually closer to their neighbours than residents in many other parts of the country. Nearly three in five (59%) of polled adults stop to chat whenever they see their neighbours and close to a third of adults would also be willing to lend their car to their neighbour.
Vinay Gupta, co-founder of WhipCar.com, said: "Our research paints a picture of a Britain that's feeling particularly united right now. The London 2012 Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee seem to have nudged neighbourhoods closer together - and particularly Londoners."
WhipCar.com is the world's first peer-to-peer car rental service. Since 2010, the neighbour-to-neighbour car club has connected car owners who don't drive their car all the time with safe, approved drivers nearby. All cars and drivers are screened by WhipCar and every rental is covered by WhipCar’s comprehensive insurance policy, which temporarily replaces the owner's existing insurance for the duration of hire. Membership is free for both car owners and drivers. The cars available through the scheme are all well looked after and no older than eight years. Only safe drivers are able to join WhipCar and you must have held a full UK driving licence for at least 12 months.
