Watching a beloved family pet age painfully is not easy. Knowing how to make the decision to ease or end your pet’s suffering is a difficult one, but Azure Holland, DVM, has made the entire process easier by establishing a mobile veterinary service offering in-home pet hospice and euthanasia services to pet lovers in the Triangle via azureholland.com.

Dr. Holland was raised in Bailey, N.C., and has been influenced by the old ways of doing things in Eastern North Carolina. As a veterinarian practicing in Raleigh, she was able to travel to Bailey to help her parents and brother say goodbye to Venus, the family’s golden retriever.

Venus was in her favorite spot in the yard on that warm, sunny day. Dr. Holland was able to care for Venus and performed the final act of love so that Venus would not suffer any longer. Inspired by this experience, she knew she should help other families and their beloved pets. Instead of spending her final moments in sterile animal hospital, Venus was comfortable at home in her yard. It was the right way to do the right thing.

Euthanasia is not right for every pet or every family. Some pet owners may not want to choose euthanasia immediately or at all. In these situations, hospice care can provide time for the family to decide or to allow the pet to pass on naturally and in comfort.

Hospice is not about curing, it is about providing comfort for your pet’s remaining life. Hospice care is about education as well. Dr. Holland can spend as much time as necessary to describe what to expect during this time, and she can offer nutritional guidance and instructions on the use of medication.

Hospice care includes a treatment plan of pain management along with fluid therapy and other services that can help make your pet comfortable in your home. It is about allowing your pet to progress through the final stages of its life with dignity and comfort in its home, surrounded by family.
