As the population is getting older, with some motorists driving well into their 90s, it might not be a case of scrapping licences, but finding the most appropriate car.

The nation’s motorists are aging; more and more elderly drivers are taking driving tests. Official figures from the Department for Transport show that 20 drivers aged 80 and over took their driving test for the first time this year with one 91 year-old motorist passing for the first time.*

This individual, however, was not the oldest person sitting the test as one motorist who got behind the wheel was 93 years old. Unfortunately, the individual did not pass the test, whereas three 80 year-old motorists and one 81 year-old were successful.

Car Loan 4U Co-Director Ryan Dignan comments;

“Getting older, doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for elderly drivers. As the population is getting older, with some motorists driving well into their 90s, it might not be a case of scrapping licences, but finding the most appropriate car.

“As the population gets older, it’s possible there could be more elderly drivers on the road in the future. Older drivers might have a series of challenges to face especially when choosing a new car. There are a huge number of cars available to suit your needs and requirements if you are an elderly motorist.”

Elderly drivers are required to renew their licence every three years after their 70th birthday, with figures proving that some elderly motorists are up to speed with the DVLA’s standards. There are approximately six million over 70s on the roads. Over the last 30 years there has been an increase in the number of elderly women holding a driving licence.**

The nation is living longer thanks to healthy living and other factors. Around one in six of the UK population is aged 65 or above and this is set to increase. ***
