Gartner Research, a leading information technology research and advisory company, predicted in an earlier report that the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for application testing will grow 17% by 2012 from $2 billion in 2009. Independent, or vendor-provided, application testing as a separate business segment will grow at 50-60% Gartner said.
Test case automation as a subset of the application testing market is growing because of real business benefits such as:
- Reducing execution time for regression tests
- Greater test case coverage and multi-environment test execution
- Time reallocated to execute other types of tests
- Establishing a “continuous build” strategy
- Automating results reporting and supporting performance test implementation
The rising popularity of automated testing services in North America from Avantica Technologies and other Nearshore software engineering services providers is related to a number of factors, including:

- Continued changes in traditional software engineering methodologies such as Waterfall
- Focus on higher productivity and cost reduction
One example: over a five week Scrum-based rapid product iteration effort it is not possible to run full test cycles and full regression of previously run test cases except those that are automated.
Other influencing factors affecting the popularity of test automation services from Nearshore providers such as Avantica include rising dissatisfaction with the vast time-zone and distance differences between India and China outsourcers and North America; continued high turn-over of test engineers at far-shore outsourcers – up to 30% annually; and hierarchical, non-collaborative outsourcing business models.
