“As it turns out all of these guys kicked very well in the afternoon session. I wish all of them could know the experience of playing professional football. Michael Husted.

Retired NFL kicker and current kicking coach Michael Husted of Husted Kicking helped evaluate kicking specialists for the UFL’s Sacramento Mountain Lions this last weekend.
Husted writes about it in his blog Michael Husted.com.
“I had an opportunity to help the UFL’s Sacramento Mountain Lions evaluate kicking specialists for their open tryout,” says Husted. “I like the new coaching staff. The head coach is Turk Schonert, who was the quarterback coach in Tampa Bay my rookie year.”
Husted adds, “I always liked Turk and thought that he was an excellent coach. I am excited for the Mountain Lions this year.”
Husted also has experience with some of the other Mountain Lions coaches as well.
“I know a few of the other Mountain Lion coaches as well from my NFL career,” says Husted. “Harold Jackson was the wide receiver coach in Tampa. Chuck Bresnahan was DB coach when I was in Oakland. I know Bobby DePaul from playing the Bears during my career as well as his attendance at the Aguiar/Husted Pro Camp.”
Husted says he is always looking for professional opportunities for up and coming kicking specialists, and says the invitation to consult with the Mountain Lions came from such a conversation.
“Their special teams coach is Rick Courtright,” says Husted. “I had been communicating with him about the top specialists from our April 2012 Aguiar / Husted Pro Camp and asked him to look at the Rankings Page on our website to view our top guys.”
As it turned out, several of the specialists from the Aguiar / Husted Pro Camp were invited to try out, and Husted was asked to help evaluate the talent that attend the tryout.
Husted says helping to evaluate players he has worked with or recommends is not an issue.
“As a kicking coach/ consultant, I have to be objective when helping coaches evaluate the results at events like this, even though I know many of the kickers who attended,” says Husted. “I am upfront with each of the kickers and let them know I will provide the coaching staff with my honest assessment.”
As a kicking coach, and retired NFL player, Husted has the experience to know the value of an ‘honest assessment’ when it comes to evaluating kickers to play professional football.
Husted spent 9 years in the NFL and his consistency on field goals and his power on kick-offs won him the job as an undrafted rookie. He went on to have a successful rookie season where he was named to Football Digest’s All Rookie team.
During his time with the Tampa Bay Bucs, Michael established several records including:
•All-time leading scorer (502 pts.)
•Longest field goal (57 yards)
•Most 50+ field goals (10)
After his NFL career, Husted was involved in an online start up, iPlayers.net in 2005. This innovated site at the time took high school recruiting from “snail mail” to the Internet.
In 2007, the company was acquired by the Active Network in San Diego, CA. After working in the “corporate” world for a couple of years, Husted realized that one of his passions was helping athletes to leverage their sport for a college education.
Since that time, Husted founded the National Camp Series with its unique KIX player rating system. The KIX platform objectively measures kickers, punters and long snappers through statistics which takes out all subjectivity in the evaluation process.
Husted says he appreciated the opportunity to help the Mountain Lions evaluate the kicking specialists who attended the tryout and wishes all the kickers the best of luck on their career path.
“As it turns out all of these guys kicked very well in the afternoon session,” says Husted. “I like all of these guys and think that all of them would do well in the UFL. I wish all of them could play and know the experience of playing professional football.”
