When author Claudia Rhodes saw the picture on the cover of Cover Girl while she was still in grammar school, she knew she wanted to be a model. She was turned down by Powers Modeling Agency for being too little, but deemed perfect for Harry Conover’s agency. Renamed Claudia, the author’s modeling journey thus began—a journey that unfolds in colorful “Moments in Time: A Model’s Book.”
Rhodes started as a cover girl model, modeling for Sears, Montgomery Ward, the studios of Pagano and Becker, and other catalogue houses. Mail-order work provided her with steady especially when she was off having babies. She never stopped modeling even while she had children. While pregnant, she would do coat ads and face shots. The unique thing about being a model was it meant “not being tied down. Rhodes liked being her own boss and controlling the fees. She was later offered movie contracts and auditions in California, but she was too afraid to fly. She got another lucky break, went on to model for TV, and even landed her first commercial.
As readers immerse in this fascinating autobiographical account, they will see snapshots of Rhodes’ life through photographs, notes, and short narratives of her experiences. Drama, heartbreak, hope and love permeate the pages as her career continued but never really flourished. Still, the author is grateful for the blessings in her life—for her family and beloved children. She dedicates “Moments in Time: A Model’s Book” to her children, great grandchildren and future great-great grandchildren, that they may have a better understanding of her life and why things happened as they did.
