Noted St. Louis Car Accident Attorney Chris Dysart Joins NHTSA and the Missouri Highway Patrol in Reminding Drivers to Avoid Drunk Driving

St. Louis car accident attorney Christopher Dysart of The Dysart Law Firm, P.C.(http://www.dysart-law.com) joins the Missouri Highway Patrol and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) in reminding drivers to “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” Law enforcement’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign begins August 17, 2012 and runs through Labor Day Weekend September 3, 2012. NHTSA said more than 10,000 police departments and law enforcement agencies across the country will support this campaign.

As noted by Colonel Ronald Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, “Substance-impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities.”

New NHTSA research indicates the 10,228 alcohol-impaired fatalities in 2010 accounted for nearly one out of three highway deaths on U.S. roads – the equivalent of one death every 51 minutes. During the same time period, more than two-thirds of drunk driving deaths (7,145 or 70 percent) involved drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or higher. Overall, the most frequently recorded BAC among drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes was .18 BAC.

“The cost to society of drunk driving is unacceptably high,” said Mr. Dysart. We must stop drunk driving completely.”

As a lawyer representing the victims of drunk driving accidents, Mr. Dysart said he often sees first-hand the devastation that results from such accidents. My Dysart advises the following:

To Protect Yourself Against Drunk Drivers:
·    Wear you seat belt and make sure all passengers are buckled up. Report drunk or impaired drivers to law enforcement right away.
·    Recognize that twice as many alcohol-impaired crashes occur over the weekend and four times as many occur at night.

To Avoid Potentially Injuring Someone By Driving Drunk:
·    Plan Ahead: Designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys. Otherwise take a taxi or use mass transit.
·    Consider spending the night rather than getting behind the wheel.

If You or a Loved One Have Been Involved in A Collision With a Drunk Driver Recognize That:
·    Drunk drivers are responsible for the injuries they cause and are liable for compensatory and punitive damages.
·    A bar or restaurant that supplied alcohol to a drunk driver may also be held accountable if they supplied alcohol to someone visibly intoxicated.

Attorney Dysart, a former federal prosecutor, explained that not only can drunk drivers be charged criminally for their actions, but they should be held accountable in civil court for the damages and injuries inflicted on innocent victims. Mr. Dysart advises that victims of drunk driving should immediately contact an experienced accident attorney so that their rights can be protected, and so that critical evidence can be preserved.
