Pioneer Valley Federal Credit Union CEO Named 2012 Credit Union Hero

With today’s volatile economy, it hasn’t been an easy road, but we’ve stayed true to our members by continuing to offer affordable banking services and benefits.

Pioneer Valley Federal Credit Union, the second oldest Postal Credit Union in the United States, announces that Chief Executive Officer, and Board of Director Anabela Pereira will be honored on Sept. 10 for the Banker & Tradesman’s Credit Union Hero award at a ceremony and dinner at the Hyatt Regency Boston hotel.

“This hero award is truly an honor and I accept it on behalf of the amazing staff at Pioneer Valley Federal Credit Union,” said Pereira. “With today’s volatile economy, it hasn’t been an easy road, but we’ve stayed true to our members by continuing to offer affordable banking services and benefits. Thankfully, we’ve been allowed to service and support the community since 1923, and we’ll do our best to continue the tradition.”

Pereira started her career as a teller for Pioneer Valley Federal Credit Union in 1985. It was there she acquired the skills to become the leader of the organization. She was promoted to Operations Manager in 1989, and then to President and CEO in 1998. Pereira not only worked full-time for the credit union during these years, but also earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Business from Bay Path College.

When Pereira began, the credit union had $2 million in assets with 900 members. Today, the Pioneer Valley Federal Credit Union has $41 million in assets with 6,100 members and growing. She added two new employer groups to the Credit Union’s field of membership, Baystate Health (Springfield’s largest employer), and Westover Air Force Base.

Pereira supports the credit union movement by lobbying on both the state and national levels. She is the chairperson of the legislative committee for the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the Mass. Credit Union League, a trustee of the Credit Union Employees Retirement Association, and also serves on several credit union committees.

Pioneer Valley Federal Credit Union financially supports many charity organizations. This year, the credit union made donations to over twelve community causes including the “Hospital of The Future” at Baystate Health, The Children’s Miracle Network supporting Baystate Children’s Hospital, Rays of Hope, Step Out for Hospice, The Jimmy Fund, and The Children’s Cancer Hope Fund. Pereira also promotes volunteerism among staff members, and feels it’s important to be personally invested in local causes.

Pereira embraces new product and service innovations to help everyday consumers with their financial matters. She has introduced beneficial programs like the “Credit Builder Program”, the “Mass Saves 0% Heat Loan Program”, and a “Bank-at-Work” program. She has launched the credit union’s first financial literacy program, “Change the Future”, which includes one-on-one counseling with certified financial life coaches. Pereira also personally teaches “Financial Fitness Workshops” at a local college.

During Pereira’s time as CEO, the Pioneer Valley Federal Credit Union has introduced many new benefits, offering four scholarships totaling $4,000 annually, “Second Chance Checking Accounts”, Emergency Fund Accounts, Member Appreciation Block parties and more.

Banker & Tradesman has chosen their heroes, who will be honored at the 2012 Credit Union Heroes Awards dinner on Monday, September 10 at the Hyatt Regency Boston. Lark Jurev Palermo, President & CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston, Inc., will give the keynote speech. A portion of proceeds from this event will be donated to the Habitat for Humanity. Eleven winners have been chosen for the honor.
