Coping with the daily challenges of a chronic condition takes a toll on the emotions, for both patients and their loved ones, which in turn affects communication. They need education and support to help them to navigate the road ahead.

Dr. Gary McClain is speaking at a family retreat for individuals who have been diagnosed with Factor VII deficiency bleeding disorder and their families on September 7-9, 2012, at the Rocking Horse Ranch in New York. The retreat is sponsored by Comprehensive Health Education Services, LLC. A specialist in the emotional and spiritual impact of chronic and catastrophic illnesses, Gary McClain, PhD, developed JustGotDiagnosed.com to address a serious need he saw going unfulfilled; namely, a way for newly-diagnosed patients to receive help in coping with their emotional reactions to their diagnosis. Dr. McClain also blogs on the patient social networking site, AllianceHealth.com.

McClain will lead an interactive workshop titled “Addressing the Psychosocial Implications of Factor VII.” Goals of the workshop will include:

1.    Address the psychological and social issues that arise from having a chronic condition

2.    Expand the knowledge, responses and perspectives for patients and families

3.    Introduce coping skills to promote better health and self-esteem building

4.    Offer guidance for building support systems to address the stressors on caregivers

5.    Provide tools to maintain effective communication skills within the family, support systems, and caregivers

In describing his workshop at the Factor VII Retreat, McClain emphasized the importance of recognizing the impact that a chronic condition has on emotions, self-image, and personal relationships. “Coping with the daily challenges of a chronic condition takes a toll on the emotions, for both patients and their loved ones, which in turn affects communication. They need education and support to help them to navigate the road ahead. This retreat will provide individuals living with Factor VII deficiency with additional resources to increase their emotional quality of life. I am honored to be involved.”
