What do you do when you’re a hopelessly unknown, unsigned musician, without any connections to the music industry? Musician Zander Thal, like hundreds (if not thousands) of musical hopefuls, found himself in that exact position.
“I have a musician friend in New York City who is extremely talented," explained Mr. Thal. "He should have had a record contract by now, but he’s been a virtual unknown for over two decades. It’s extremely frustrating, and I didn’t want to end up like that.”
So Zander Thal took matters into his own hands. “I went ahead and recorded my songs, produced my own album, made it available on iTunes and Amazon.com, and started spreading the word on the internet—all without the help of the mighty record industry.”
So far, the reaction to Thal’s debut album, “Deserves Got Nothing To Do With It” has been largely positive throughout the blogosphere.
Comments like “I really dig your songs” and “Love your album!” are flooding Mr. Thal’s e-mail.
“It’s a great feeling to get such a positive response on the Web. It’s something I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish on my own if I was starting out 10-20 years ago.”
When asked to describe his music, Zander Thal responded, “It’s hard to categorize my songs. They’re electronic pop, but I don’t think anyone is writing songs quite like these.”
So what does the future hold for this musical hopeful? “Right now, my plan is to get as much exposure for the album as possible, gather as many Facebook and Twitter fans as I can, and hope for a “critical mass” in which the mainstream record industry takes notice.”
In a notoriously difficult business to break into, success stories from unsigned artists are hard to come by, but Zander Thal is one to watch out for.
