Elizabeth Horvath, a woman of Ukranian and Hungarian descent whose life has been a constant reminder of the strength of the human spirit, recounts her life story in Monsters in the Shadow: My Life, a True Story, to empower readers, especially children of dysfunctional families. A product of her own dream amidst her stark reality, Horvath’s book serves as a looking glass where they can see a world far different from theirs, yet so familiar that they can relate with and learn powerful life-changing lessons.

“I dedicate this book to the children of addicts, the tender souls who do not know that they are being cheated out of life, that they are being sacrificed and misled before they know why,” shares Horvath. “It doesn’t take long for the children of addicts to realize that they are different from others; that their souls have been burned; that they will never find the parental love they so relentlessly pursue.”

Horvath shares how tough it is to live in a dysfunctional family, especially within a Communistic society. Her parents lived in a small farm in the quiet little town of Bashalom, Hungary, near the border of Russia. Yet, their life has been very disquieting. The nightmare began when her mother married her wild, drunken and abusive father. He publicly humiliated her mother on their wedding day. A few months into the marriage, he kicked her in the stomach which caused a miscarriage. Life has been very tumultuous ever since.

Despite all these, Horvath believes that the human spirit will prevail; that the “children of addicts” will survive even without much nurturance; that they can dream past the addicted parent, out of their seemingly hopeless situation and into productive and happy lives. She knows it is possible. Out of Hungary, to Italy and eventually to America, she has achieved this dream; and lived to tell her story in Monsters in the Shadow.

Author Elizabeth Horvath to talk about her inspiring autobiography in a radio interview with Stu Taylor.
