Going back to school can be both exciting and scary for kids. And it’s an especially challenging time for kids with asthma. Despite the fact that approximately 10% of children worldwide have asthma, few tools exist to give kids the information and confidence they need to feel like they can control their condition. In the US alone, more than 10 million kids have asthma. “That’s why we thought it was important to launch our interactive asthma story, NIck's Big Day, in these early weeks of school,” says North South Studios’ President, Bill Newell. “We know that no matter how hard parents try to reassure children, anxiety is inevitable and we wanted to help.”
Nick’s Big Day tells the story of a young boy who finds himself struggling to catch his breath during a soccer game. Though Nick makes light of it, his coach, a former Olympic athlete and asthma sufferer herself, notices and tells his parents. The next day Nick and his family visit the doctor and learn the basics of asthma control. In the days that follow Nick returns to his school and his team somewhat afraid, but ready to put his new-found knowledge to work. As the story unfolds, Nick becomes more and more confident and is able to be an important member of his soccer team.
Every screen in Nick’s Big Day is interactive, with amusing animation and opportunities for kids to explore. Rich sound effects and music complement the action, and kids can choose to read along with the story or have it read to them. Parents will not need to oversee the learning process. Nicks’ Big Day is easy to use and engaging enough that children as young as four can use it on their own. Kids learn how asthma can make it hard for them to breathe. They hear about four basic steps for controlling asthma and learn about using a peak flow meter and inhaler with a spacer. Finally, they learn about the importance of an asthma action plan and how it will help them control their asthma.
“We decided to make Nick’s Big Day available free of charge,” says Newell. “We have spent our entire careers creating commercial products for children and we are proud of our work. But this time it was time to give back to the families that have supported our efforts for so many years. We intend to make Nicks Big Day available soon in Spanish. Later we will follow it up with more storybooks that deal with serious childhood illnesses.”
