Mutt and Kitty, celebrity spokes-pets for Merck Animal Health, will appear on “The Balancing Act” airing on Lifetime Television August 21 and October 2 to discuss the importance of vaccinating family pets. Mutt and Kitty support veterinarians across the United States working to bring healthier and happier lives to pets across America through their “Vote for Vaccination” immunization awareness campaign.

According to the American Pet Products Association, Americans spent $50.96 billion on pets in 2011, 65 percent of which was related to food and veterinary costs. Despite this, veterinarians are seeing a decline in the number of dogs and cats that are being routinely vaccinated, even for the most important diseases. The segment will help pet owners understand the differences between core vaccines and lifestyle vaccines and what preventative measures they should discuss with their veterinarian.

Mutt and Kitty will be joined by veterinarian and Director of Technical services at Merck Animal Health, Dr. Christopher Pappas. “Veterinarians are concerned with the downward trend in vaccination because this may lead to the resurgence of very devastating diseases,” said Dr. Pappas. “Our aim as veterinarians is to have around 75 percent of the pets in a community vaccinated to create ‘community immunity’ and prevent outbreaks.”

Viewers can tune in to catch Mutt and Kitty and watch this must-see event on the Lifetime Network at 7am EST on August 21 and October 2. For more information on the Vote for Vaccination campaign, visit http://www.mypet.com.
