How many water heaters does it take to bathe seven elephants? At the Houston Zoo in Texas, the answer is one Eternal hybrid water heater.
Every day the zookeepers at the Houston Zoo in Texas spend approximately two hours bathing seven elephants. Bathing the elephants is part of the zookeeper’s husbandry routine and each elephant can take 10 – 30 minutes to wash. Besides keeping the animals clean, it also allows the zookeepers to get close to the elephants and check the condition of their skin as well as the general health of the animal.
At the beginning of the year, the zoo struggled with the previous water heater. It was less energy efficient and did not provide consistent hot water. Once the Houston Zoo installed an Eternal GU195S hybrid water heater, they immediately noticed a difference. Now they have plenty of hot water and the temperature and water pressure is consistent. Since the contractor had to install the unit high on a wall, the Eternal’s compact size and flexible design made the GU195S an ideal solution for this application.
The Eternal hybrid water heater also helps the Houston Zoo achieve several goals associated with its green initiatives and conservation efforts. The Houston Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has a green task force that is involved with recycling and water conservation. Since Eternal is an Energy Star appliance and has a 98% thermal efficiency rating, it helps the zoo conserve energy and control its water usage. By using an Eternal, the zoo reduces the amount of water wasted and energy consumed during each elephant bath. Brian Hill, the PR Director for the Houston Zoo said, “Zoos are conservation organizations and we believe if we are going to talk the talk about conservation, we should walk the walk.”
Grand Hall USA, manufacturer of the Eternal hybrid water heater, is proud to be a part of the Houston Zoo’s program. Paul Home, VP of Product and Marketing said, “Not only does our water heater produce endless hot water, but it also helps organizations like the Houston Zoo provide a clean and comfortable environment for its inhabitants. We want to help everyone improve their lives, become more energy efficient, and preserve the environment.”
The Eternal hybrid water heater is available in four different models and is designed for residential and commercial applications. In addition to providing endless hot water with 98% efficiency, it comes with a 15 year residential / 5 year commercial no leak heat exchanger warranty. The newest model, the GU100, is designed for residential applications and runs on a ½” gas line. For more information on the Eternal hybrid water heater, go to eternalwaterheater.com.
