Oxford Performance Materials has been selected as part of a team to participate in the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII). NAMII is the pilot institute for the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI), the initiative announced by President Obama in March 2012. OPM will work as part of a larger team of universities, companies, and organizations led by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM). A collaborative inter-agency team determined that Additive Manufacturing, specifically, would garnish the most benefit for the nation’s defense, energy, space and commercial sectors.

OPM currently sells biomedical implants and industrial parts made from its proprietary high performance polymer using additive manufacturing technology. As a clear leader in this field, the firm’s participation in NAMII will further enhance its global position and create immediate commercial growth opportunities. “OPM has been at the forefront of critical Additive Manufacturing development for many years,” said Scott DeFelice, President and CEO of OPM. “We are delighted that our expertise and capabilities have been recognized and we look forward to participating in this ground breaking initiative. OPM currently produces biomedical implants additively manufactured via selective laser sintering (SLS). The primary use of such implants is for orthopedic reconstruction in cases of trauma, with early cases focused on facial and cranial reconstruction. Because Additive Manufacturing can produce nearly any imaginable geometry, OPM has the unique ability to make patient specific implants designed directly from CT scan or MRI digital imaging for a perfect anatomical fit.

In addition to offering biomedical products, OPM is actively developing various defense applications. In particular, OPM’s involvement in NAMII will include the establishment of a specific technical database for the firm’s polymer products, which aerospace and other engineers will use to design lightweight, efficient structures. Such structures offer substantial operational and environmental advantages, as aerospace systems can subsequently extend their range and utilize less energy, benefitting both industry and the nation as a whole as the adoption of these emerging technologies continues to spread.
