Trupanion’s pet-friendly workplace and inclusive environment helped the company earn the award.

Washington's Best Workplaces award
Our employees are the most important component to our success, hands down.

Pet insurance company Trupanion was honored as one of Washington's Best Workplaces by the Puget Sound Business Journal at a fun-filled ceremony at Safeco Field on August 9. The company was awarded third place in the Large Company category, based on the results of an anonymous employee survey. Trupanion’s pet-friendly environment of over 60 dogs and even a few cats, complete with complimentary pet insurance and dog walking services, was a big driver in employee satisfaction, and therefore a main factor in the award.

“Our employees are the most important component to our success, hands down. We encourage open communication and truly listen to suggestions and concerns in order to provide a positive work environment everyone enjoys,” said Erich Wuhrman, Vice President of Human Resources at Trupanion. “We’ve seen the benefits in our retention rate – an average of 97.8% - unheard of in the customer service industry.”

Headquartered in the Ballard community of Seattle, Trupanion offers cat and dog insurance in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico with 90% coverage for diagnostic tests, surgeries, medications, hospital stays, and alternative therapies for the treatment of accidents and illnesses.

“Work-force development has never been more important – or more difficult – than it is in today’s global economy,” said Emory Thomas Jr., publisher of the Business Journal. “We believe the Business Journal, as the Puget Sound area’s top source of business information, has an important role to play in drawing attention to innovations and excellence in the management of our region’s No. 1 resource: its people.”

The finalists – 25 small companies, 25 medium-sized companies, 25 large companies, and 10 extra-large companies – were celebrated at a one-of-a-kind awards event at Safeco Field on Aug. 9 that included ballpark food and drink, walking the bases, speed pitching, and an awards presentation.
