On August 27, 1887, 80 Santa Feans gathered to create the Mutual Building and Loan Association with just $500. They opened in a tiny downtown office under the direction of President William G. Griffin, who is said to have walked from his native Virginia all the way to New Mexico. Over the years, the Association changed its charter and its name a few times before becoming Century Bank in 1992. Century Bank is a featured business Hutton Broadcasting’s radio stations. Hutton Broadcasting is SantaFe.com’s parent company.
Now, 125 years later, Century Bank has grown to include seven branches in Santa Fe, Espanola, Albuquerque, and Las Cruces, New Mexico, offering a full range of banking services including investment accounts and loan services. Century Bank has over 170 employees and reports bank assets totaling $561 million. The bank is poised for more growth along the Rio Grande corridor: later this year, a new branch will open in Rio Rancho.
On August 27, 2012, Century Bank celebrates its 125th birthday with cake and prizes at all locations.
“Century Bank has a significant history of investment, stability and service to New Mexicans. We look forward to continued success in investing in our employees, our communities and our state,” said the chairman of the board, Bryan “Chip” Chippeaux.
