Many people living across the United States today keep a houseplant or two in order to beautify their homes. However, recent research by NASA, The University of Sydney Australia and a new article posted at Health and Wellness portal BeWellBuzz.com have discovered many health benefits associated with keeping a variety of standard houseplants in homes in most American areas.
Common sources of indoor pollution include, but are not limited to, Household products, Mold, pollen, and other biological contaminants, Carbon monoxide and other harmful gasses, Tobacco smoke, Pesticides, Formaldehyde, lead, asbestos, and other materials used in the building. But, according to a joint study conducted between NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA), and posted on the NASA website in April of 2012, research has been conducted on the potential use of houseplants as a tool in solving indoor air pollution problems.
NASA research on indoor plants has found that living plants are so efficient at absorbing contaminants in the air that some will be launched into space as part of the biological life support system aboard future orbiting space stations. Dr. Bill Wolverton, a former researcher from NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center, Bay St. Louis, Miss., which conducted this research has stated in a NASA media release from April 2012; “Combining nature with technology can increase the effectiveness of plants in removing air pollutants,” He has gone on to state on the record; “We feel that future results will provide an even stronger argument that common indoor landscaping plants can be a very effective part of a system used to provide pollution free homes and work places.”
Additional research has been conducted by The University of Technology Sydney Australia in a report classified as ‘USE OF LIVING POT-PLANTS TO CLEANSE INDOOR AIR – RESEARCH REVIEW’ in 2007 concluded that potted-plants can reliably reduce total volatile organic compound (TVOC) loads, a major class of indoor pollutants, by 75%. The evidence conducted by this research concludes that the potted-plants are an innovative technology for solving indoor air pollution, which can otherwise cause a range of adverse health effects, including building-related illnesses found across the globe.
