Robert I. Evans, Founder and Managing Director of the Philadelphia fundraising firm EHL Consulting Group, was interviewed by the Wilmington News Journal regarding a recent five million dollar gift from DuPont Co. to the University of Delaware.
To date, the gift is the largest corporate contribution the University of Delaware has received towards the school’s capital campaign to fund the $132 million Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Lab in Newark. The News Journal’s Wade Malcolm reports that the DuPont gift brought UD’s total private fundraising for the ISE Lab to $34 million.
“I think they are too aggressive in terms of putting the shovel in the ground,” Mr. Evans noted in the article, expressing concern that UD started construction well before they acquired half of their fundraising target, the amount EHL Consulting recommends nonprofit clients to secure before breaking ground on any capital project.
“[The project] will be a real important part of the university, and it will be transformative. And I’m certain that’s how the leadership of the university is looking at it, and they didn’t want to wait. It was a gamble on the part of the university.”
Mr. Evans also expressed appreciation for DuPont’s philanthropic commitment to UD.
“If [the University of Delaware] received $5 million from DuPont, that’s a very serious gift,” Mr. Evans said. “I applaud them for getting it, and DuPont for giving it.”
