Innovative NYC-based Race Production Company, NYCRUNS, will honor a long-lived tradition as they present the 87th Yonkers Marathon and Half-Marathon on Sunday, September 16th 2012. As the producers of this historic and beloved race, NYCRUNS intends to continue restoring the reputation and heighten the recognition of The Yonkers Marathon & Half Marathon.

Famously described by two-time Olympic marathon runner John Kelley as “A Marathoner’s Marathon”, the allure of this formerly popular race had faded in recent years. Once a distinctly challenging course that was an Olympic qualifying marathon and National Championship, the Yonkers Marathon and Half Marathon was completed by such running legends as Ted Corbitt and Harry Murphy. Although its popularity has waxed and waned, today, the Yonkers Marathon and Half Marathon is the second oldest marathon in the U.S. (Boston being the oldest) and has begun regaining its popularity with the help of NYCRUNS.

NYCRUNS first became involved in organizing the Yonkers Marathon and Half Marathon in 2011 when its formative efforts doubled the races participants. Founder Steve Lastoe intends to build on last year’s success by improving the races both on the course and off by focusing on the small details that are often ignored.

“Our goal for this race in 2012 is to keep growing it, put together a great post-race party, learn a little, and maybe impress the city and our fellow runners a bit.”

New for this year, NYCRUNS is ensuring runners will have an upgraded racing experience. Runners can look forward to a beautiful Hudson Riverside finish, Gatorade and water to be provided throughout the course, and all marathon and half marathon participants will receive a technical t-shirt and commemorative medal.

NYCRUNS will also put on a post-race party as impressive as the improvements made to the race itself. The party will take place on the waterfront and will include live music, awards, great post-race food and $2 microbrew beers provided by the party’s sponsor, The Dolphin Restaurant.

NYCRUNS aims to present a boutique-club feel, combined with big amenities and state of the art technology. Last year’s runner Stacy Floyd remarked, “If you like the small marathons, this one is a must.”

“Yonkers is proud to host this historic event once again,” Mayor Mike Spano adds. “It is our hope, with the help of NYCRUNS, that we will return this race to its original glory, making it a prominent event in the region. We are encouraged by the growth in enrollment, which has more than doubled since last year, and look forward to transforming the Yonkers Marathon into a new age and direction in the coming years.”

The Yonkers Marathon & Half Marathon are USATF certified and the marathon is a B.A.A. Boston Qualifier. The marathon will begin promptly at 8 a.m. on the morning of September 16th. Both the Marathon and Half Marathon start and finish near the Yonkers Riverfront Library conveniently located near parking, Metro North service and the waterfront in downtown Yonkers.
