WPS Health Insurance, Wisconsin’s leading not-for-profit health insurer and provider of affordable group and individual health insurance, is proud to announce that it has once again been awarded full Health Utilization Management Accreditation from URAC, a Washington, DC-based health care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry. URAC’s Health Utilization Management standards ensure that organizations conducting utilization review or management services follow a process that is clinically sound and respect patients’ and providers’ rights while giving payers reasonable guidelines to follow.

“WPS Health Insurance is honored to once again receive Health Utilization Management Accreditation from URAC,” said Mike Hamerlik, president and CEO of WPS. “Every day, we work hard to promote cost-effective care with optimal outcomes. Achieving full re-accreditation demonstrates our commitment to these goals, underscores the quality of our work with members and health care providers, and reinforces our role as a leading Wisconsin health insurer.”

URAC’s Health Utilization Management standards establish consistency in the utilization management processes. They ensure that appropriately trained clinical personnel conduct and oversee the utilization review process, that a reasonable and timely appeals process is in place, and that coverage decisions are based on valid clinical criteria. WPS has maintained URAC accreditation since 1997.

“By applying for and receiving URAC Health Utilization Management Accreditation, WPS Health Insurance has demonstrated a commitment to quality health care,” said Alan P. Spielman, URAC president and CEO. “Quality health care is crucial to our nation’s welfare and it is important to have organizations that are willing to measure themselves against national standards.”

URAC, an independent, nonprofit organization, is a leader in promoting health care quality through accreditation and certification programs. URAC’s standards keep pace with the rapid changes in the health care system and provide a mark of distinction for health care organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality and accountability. Through its broad-based governance structure and an inclusive standards development process, URAC ensures that all stakeholders are represented in setting meaningful standards for the health care industry.
