Historic Suffolk Mansion Absolute Auction

Historic Suffolk mansion will be sold in an Absolute Auction on September 7, 2012 at 5 pm EDT

“This auction is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you’re looking for a beautiful, turn-of-the-century home look no further than this Virginia property,” said Barry Cole, owner of United Country – A.B. Cole & Associates.

A piece of community history will be sold on the auction block. The turn-of-the-century home, located in Suffolk, Va., will be auctioned on Friday, September 7 to the highest bidder regardless of price.

Built in 1909 by a lumber magnate George W. Truitt, this classical-revival mansion rests at the corner of Bank and Grace Streets in the heart of historic downtown Suffolk. Reported to be the town’s first millionaire, it is apparent Truitt spared no expense in the construction of this home.

The house encompasses many rare features within its roughly 5,800 square feet, which cover five floors, including 21 rooms with 14-foot ceilings, a sweeping staircase leading to the third floor ballroom, formal rooms, five bedrooms, three and one-half bathrooms, servants quarters with two bedrooms, a butler’s pantry, extensive use of marble throughout, rare curly pine molding, wainscoating and trim in the drawing room and a music gallery overlooking the living room. The home’s exterior features all-brick construction, architectural columns, stately gardens, a circular gated rear entry and portico, a two-story four-bay carriage house and a stable.

“This auction is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If you’re looking for a beautiful, turn-of-the-century home look no further than this Virginia property,” said Barry Cole, owner of United Country – A.B. Cole & Associates.

The September 7 auction will be held at 5 p.m. at the Suffolk Center for the Cultural Arts at 110 W. Finney Avenue in Downtown Suffolk. Registration will begin at 4 p.m. The heirs of this estate have designated a portion of the proceeds of the estate to the ALS Association, and to the Western Tidewater Free Clinic.

Two additional events on Friday September 7 following the real estate sale and Saturday, September 8 at 10 a.m. will feature the estate’s extensive collection of antiques and personal property. These auctions will include period furniture including early American, Hepplewhite, Chippendale and Biggs. The events will also allow potential buyers to bid for fine China, crystal, sterling and silverplate, original artwork, dolls and Oriental rugs.
