In the early reader chapter book “Jake the Detective” (published by AuthorHouse), Susan Troutt tells the humorous story of a young boy who is out to solve a big mystery.
When things begin to disappear from Jake's classroom, the 9-year-old sets his sights on catching the thief. With the help of his mystery-reading cousin, Clyde, Jake is sure to snag the thief. After all, Jake’s good at following directions – maybe too good. When Jake takes Clyde’s many suggestions literally, the results are uproarious.
When Jake does exactly what he is told, it leads to a lot of mix-ups and a whole lot of hilarious mistakes. Add in Jake's bad hair, his short attention span and his bossy classmate, and readers are in for some laugh-out-loud fun.
“My test audience tells me it is very funny,” says Troutt, a retired grade school teacher. “Kids identify with the characters and situations and love that it is presented in a humorous manner.”
From “Jake the Detective”:
Jake flopped beside Clyde on the couch. “Your advice didn't work. I need another idea to solve this big mystery.”
“Still haven’t caught the thief, huh?” asked Clyde.
“No, and what’s worse, Robert’s lunch money is missing too.”
“Well, the thief could be anyone. Looks like you’ll have to go undercover.”
“Undercover! Then I’ve got to start packing!”
Jake ran to his room and snatched the fuzzy white blanket from his bed. He crammed it into his book bag.
When recess time came, Jake put the blanket over his head.
“What’s the blanket for?” asked Robert.
“I’m going undercover to catch the thief.”
