A large majority of likely voters believe that when a business gives its financial support to controversial causes, it is fair for consumers who don’t agree to take action against that business, including boycotts or picketing, a new IBOPE Inteligência poll finds.
At total of 70% of voters say it is very fair (46%) or somewhat fair (24%) for consumers to take actions such as boycotts or picketing if they disagree with a company that “takes a public stand or gives financial support to one side on a divisive issue.” A total of 26% say such actions are somewhat unfair (12%) or very unfair (14%).
The survey also finds, however, that almost as many say it is not appropriate for an elected official to speak out against that business as a total of 58% say it is either very inappropriate (41%) or somewhat inappropriate (17%). A rounded total of 36% say it is either very appropriate (19%) or somewhat appropriate (18%).
The greatest demographic differences on these issues are between Democrats and Republicans. Republicans are far less likely (55%) than Democrats (80%) or independents (74%) to believe it is fair for consumers to take action against a company with which it disagrees. Democrats are more likely (55%) than Republicans (15%) or independents (36%) to say it is appropriate for elected officials to speak out against a business in those same circumstances.
From August 20-22, IBOPE Inteligência conducted an online survey of 2,108 likely US voters. The margin of error is +/- 2.2 percentage points. A sampling of IBOPE Inteligência's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, was invited to participate. Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender and education to more accurately reflect the population.
