Omega XL Reports New Independent Study: Omega-3s Improve Cognitive Flexibility and Executive Function

Share Article

A recent independent study on US military personal demonstrated a strong association between the levels of omega-3s, such as found in Omega XL, and cognitive flexibility and executive function.

Omega-3 levels were directly associated with cognitive flexibility and executive function

The US Military has a strong interest in the potential health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, such as found in Omega XL, for service members, particularly for the potential cognitive effects for soldiers on active duty. A recent study published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience measured the red blood cell levels of Omega-3 DHA and EPA in 78 Iraqi based US Service personal and found significantly lower levels of Omega-3s than is reported for the general US population of the same age group.

The researchers, from the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness/Performance, Resilience and Enhancement Program, at the Headquarters of the Department of the Army, in Washington, DC, noted that Omega-3 levels were directly associated with cognitive flexibility and executive function, especially in the 81% of the test subjects who reported poor sleep quality. In those subjects, cognitive flexibility and executive function were higher in subjects with Omega-3 levels above versus below the mean.

The conclusion among the researchers was that cognitive flexibility and executive function were positively related to blood levels of Omega-3s suggesting that increasing Omega-3 intake may improve neurocognitive performance - essential during deployment - and offer an element of resilience to poor sleep.
