America's Finest Pet Doors, manufacturer of the Endura Flap, puts variable magnetic strength to the test.

America’s Finest Pet Doors, the authority in dog doors and cat doors for walls, windows, and residential entryways, announce startling results after a recent test regarding variable magnetic strength features on pet door flaps.

PetDoors.com parent company Patio Pacific has marketed and overseen production on pet doors for sliding glass doors since the mid-1970s. Ever since the release of the Endura Flap™ design in the early 2000s, it has been increasingly popular as a highly wind-resistant design. Patio Pacific retained a PhD from the Mechanical Engineering department at nearby California Polytechnic Institute at San Luis Obispo to conduct laboratory tests comparing the wind resistance capabilities of the Endura Flap design to marketing-leading designs from two other manufacturers. The results were startling.

The test was designed to determine the wind speed at which the flap ‘let go’ and simply blew open. That is, after all, the worst case pet door performance scenario: a storm, driving rain or snow blows your pet door flap open, letting it all blow into your house as well.

Test Results
The first flap tested, ‘let go’ at 18 mph. The second flap held on to 22 mph. The Endura Flap, using only one of its three magnet pairs spots, held on to 53 mph.

At Patio Pacific we saw this performance as a little bit too good. After all, not everyone is facing gale force winds and some people would like to share a very large Endura Flap door between a big dog and a very small one or a cat. We worried that the small animal might have trouble with a large flap that was so resistant to wind.

Variable Magnetic Strength
Scott, our engineer, redesigned the threshold and was able to retain the wind resistance while reducing the resistance for small pets by about 30%. The Endura Flap pet doors are now the only pet doors on the market that allow tremendous flexibility in the magnet strength employed. Out of the box, even the extra-large 12” x 23” flap size requires less than two lbs of force to push open at the lower corners (where small pets will push). This is the lowest setting and seems to have the broadest appeal as it makes shared access between small and large pets easy while still retaining significant wind resistance. We call this feature “Variable Magnetic Strength.”

Overall wind resistance may be kept high while still allowing small pets to utilize the door by adding magnet pairs and/or setting each pair to full strength or reduced strength, giving users a lot of customization ability.

Incidentally, in keeping with Patio Pacific’s long-standing tradition of providing part upgrades at no charge to customers, existing Endura Flap pet door owners with the original metal threshold may order a new threshold and pay only for shipping.

About Patio Pacific:
Acquired by Alan Lethers in 1976, Patio Pacific – the parent company of America’s Finest Pet Doors and PetDoors.com – manufacturers and distributes dog doors and cat doors online.
