We’ve been growing, and we know Nevada will be a key part of our continued growth, but finding the right kind of skilled labor in the transportation and mechanical trades has been very difficult in both Las Vegas and Reno.
North Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) August 27, 2012
OnRamp Transportation Services, the national equipment leasing, sales and contractor services company, welcomed U.S. Senator Dean Heller of Nevada to its North Las Vegas Parts and Service facility to discuss job creation, taxes and take a ride on a brand-new Class 8 tractor trailer.
The event was organized in follow up to OnRamp’s North Las Vegas Grand Opening, which happened in February of this year, and focused on job creation and job training for the transportation industry. Senator Heller agreed that transportation is an important component of the Nevada economy and that sufficient job training for prospective employees and tax incentives for employers need to be at the forefront of discussions.
Travis Johnson, Vice President of Operations at OnRamp Transportation Services, said the Senator and OnRamp executives discussed the challenges associated with finding and hiring sufficient skilled labor to meet the demands that Nevada’s transportation industry is already placing on companies. “We were very happy to host the Senator, and very pleased with his willingness to hear our plans and discuss the challenges of adding skilled labor jobs in Nevada,” said Johnson. “We’ve been growing, and we know Nevada will be a key part of our continued growth, but finding the right kind of skilled labor in the transportation and mechanical trades has been very difficult in both Las Vegas and Reno.”
Johnson went on to explain that finding people that have the right skill and experience in the transportation trade, which is a unique trade in the category of automotive and industrial trades, is an on-going challenge in both Las Vegas and Reno. Many candidates simply do not have the skill or the experience to fill the jobs available at OnRamp and elsewhere. Senator Heller agreed that more needs to be done in conjunction with local and state leadership to ensure that job training and job availability in both Las Vegas and Reno continues to be solved as a top issue in government. Senator Heller, who himself worked in and around automotive shops in his youth, recognized the importance of trades such as transportation mechanics that serve as a foundation for job growth and steady employment.
Johnson said that along with job creation and job training, the group discussed tax incentives that will bring companies to Nevada. Senator Heller stressed that his focus would be to work with those people at the federal and state level to bring the changes necessary to incent companies to relocate to and remain in Nevada.
In addition, Senator Heller and the OnRamp Team toured the North Las Vegas Parts and Service facility, where the Senator reminisced about his youth working in automotive shops, and asked questions about the large truckload trailers on display. The group also toured a new Freightliner Cascadia Class-8 tractor and discussed the advances the transportation industry is making to improve fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
