Madonna has been named in the Guiness Book of World Records as the world's best-selling female recording artist of all time. She has sold more than 300 million records worldwide during her career. Time Magazine named her one of the "25 Most Powerful Women in the Past Century."
This popular recording artist never hesitates to stand up for what she thinks is right which often leads to much controversy. She turned 54 years old in 2012 but keeps herself looking like a women in her 30's. Madonna is known for continually looking to redo her image and music.
She was born in Bay City, Michigan and grew up being raised as a Catholic. She relocated to New York City in 1977 for a career in dance. She performed in various groups before releasing her freshman album in 1983. She followed this first album by putting out countless albums that featured songs with names such as: "Like A Virgin," "4 Minutes," "Papa Don't Preach" and "Frozen" which pushed the 1980's lyrical boundaries. Madonna is somewhat of a rebel and always strongly believes in what she does.
Some of Madonna's varied undertakings include: writing children's books, fashion design and film directing and producing. She is also known as a successful businesswoman and owns her own entertainment company.
The Recording Industry of America has recognized Madonna as the highest selling female rock singer of the 20th century. She is the second highest female artist in the United States having 64 million certified albums. She was also ranked in the number two slot behind the Beatles on the "Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists." This means she has reached the highest ranking as a solo artist and she also has the distinction of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. VH1 gave her the honors of being the "Greatest Woman in Music" this year.
