Birst Inc., the leading provider of agile business analytics, today announced that Crystal Clear Rx (CCRx) will leverage Birst’s industry-leading technology to readily identify sources of price inflation in pharmacy benefit fulfillment. Birst business analytics will serve as the foundation for CCRx’s software-as-a-service (SaaS) ClaimWatch product line, which will enable the organization and its clients to monitor pharmacy benefit contract compliance and detect errors and inefficiencies that result in higher benefit costs.

Pharmacy benefit plans and employers that self-fund pharmacy benefit plans for their employees typically rely on pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) to set up pharmacy benefits, process employee pharmacy claims, negotiate drug prices with pharmacies, and administer drug rebates issued by pharmaceutical companies. CCRx provides organizations relying on PBMs with software solutions and professional services that reduce benefit costs by eight to 15 percent by monitoring PBM performance. CCRx’s privately labeled, SaaS product line, based on Birst’s agile technology, will enable CCRx and its clients to more quickly and easily evaluate PBM contract compliance, and plan and budget for future benefit costs by analyzing vast amounts of data related to pharmacy benefit claims.

“We need to be able to analyze hundreds of thousands—and sometimes even millions—of records, quickly, easily, and affordably. In Birst, we found a cost-efficient, cloud-based BI solution that can securely combine and analyze huge amounts of data, and present results that are consistently easy to access and understand,” said Timothy J. Humphreys, Chief Operating Officer, Crystal Clear Rx. “In the past, I’ve worked with ‘big BI’ solutions like IBM’s Cognos. They aren’t as intuitive or dynamic—and they’re a half million dollars to start.”

With access to intuitive, online dashboards, users of CCRx’s ClaimWatch product line will be able to view up-to-date reports and drill-down for additional detail. The solution will help to identify benefit claims that are incorrectly processed, and also employ exception alert capabilities to flag large spikes in expenditures on particular therapeutic drug classes that can signal significant, long-term increases in benefit costs. With faster, easier access to benefit fulfillment information, CCRx will be able to dramatically reduce time spent on reporting and further enhance client satisfaction.

“Birst’s industry-leading BI technology makes it possible for organizations of all sizes to quickly and easily create cost-efficient products and services that deliver cutting-edge, enterprise class, analytical capabilities,” said Brad Peters, CEO of Birst. “As a result, businesses can focus more resources on their core mission, instead of spending months—or even years—deploying a traditional, ‘big BI’ application or building something from scratch.”
