Torie & Howard’s organic, all natural candy is a finalist in the National Confectionery Sales Association’s (NCSA) New Product Awards, the company announced today.

The USDA Organic and Kosher certified jewel-shaped hard candy has been nominated as one of the most influential candy products of 2011/2012 in the Premium/Gourmet category, according to the NCSA. The top award will be presented at an award ceremony Oct. 20 during the 2012 Candy Hall of Fame weekend in Tampa, Fla., said Torie Burke, co-founder of Torie & Howard.

The organic, low calorie candy is available in four sophisticated flavor combinations: Italian Tarocco Blood Orange and Wildflower Honey, California Pomegranate and Sweet Freestone Nectarine, D’Anjou Pear and Ceylon Cinnamon, and Pink Grapefruit and Tupelo Honey. All of the candy is free of preservatives, additives, and artificial flavorings. It also is GMO, wheat, soy, casein, gluten, nut and dairy free, Burke said. The candy is available in colorful 2-ounce recyclable steel tins and also in a playful handbag-shaped gift package. In addition, a portion of the proceeds is donated to Autism Speaks and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

“When we founded our company, Howard Slatkin and I believed that many people would be happy to find a delicious, healthy candy that they could snack on without the guilt,” she said. “So we designed our organic candy as a guilt free indulgence with epicurean flavors and just 12 calories each. They are designed to reach a discriminating, health-and-nutrition-conscious consumer and to live up to our promise, which is ‘all natural satisfaction’.”

Burke, a well-known color consultant, and Slatkin, a renowned interior designer, formed the company out of their shared passion for good food and unique flavors as well as individual health-related events. Burke began experiencing severe food allergies, and Slatkin lost more than 100 pounds, which required both to make significant changes to their diets with a renewed focus on healthy eating. “We were craving satisfying and nutritious snacks, but were not finding many on the market,” Burke said. “It seemed like the right time to tap into our love of great food and come up with our own.”
