On August 28th, Spartan Race releases a statement in response to an article written by Katie Idle after speaking with Spartan racer Jake Zimmerli, who reveals his race history and the inspirational story that fuels him to compete in Spartan Races.
According to Idle, Zimmerli is a twenty-four-year-old Utah man who had competed in two back-to-back Spartan Beast races on one hot July day. Zimmerli manages a Pediatric Endocrine Clinic in Utah and spends his free time keeping active with wakeboarding, snowboarding, and training for his upcoming Spartan Races. The article states that when Zimmerli competed in his first Spartan Race, alongside a team of 38 other people, they won 3rd place in the team category.
In the article, Zimmerli professes that he is inspired by the memory of a friend who tragically passed away less than two months ago. According to Zimmerli, “My goal is to do the Death Race with a few buddies in Josh’s memory and have all my friends, family and contacts donate $1 for every mile that we run, and maybe $10 extra if we complete.” The money will be donated to Primary Children’s Hospital, the hospital where Josh received medical treatment for many years. Spartan Race commends Zimmerli’s encouraging determination and believes that both Zimmerli and Josh are shining examples of bravery.
Zimmerli’s next race will be the Super Spartan, which will take place in Squamish on September 22nd. Although Zimmerli has an accomplished number of races under his belt, from the Colorado Military Sprint to the Vancouver Sprint, he believes that running in the DEATH RACE would be his ultimate accomplishment.
