Nashville Roofing and Sheet Metal, a division of RSS Roofing Services and Solutions (RSS), has constructed and installed a weatherproof copper dome for Belmont University’s College of Law at the new Randall and Sadie Baskin Center. The 71,000 square foot educational center is slated to open this fall.

“Clear communication and precise attention to detail were vital throughout the project due to the unique structure of the dome and the safety of my crew,” said Carlton McGrew, general manager of RSS Division in Nashville. “Given the dome had a double radius going in two different directions, with batten seams separating the segments, we had to execute the project in eight unique segments using a process of pattern planning.”

The Baskin Center project involved two years of planning and collaboration to match the design of the other buildings on campus and its natural landscape. Over the course of that two year period, RSS worked closely with Earl Swensson Architects (ESa) and general contractor RC Mathews to design and pre-fabricate the copper flat-lock seem panels to ensure an accurate fit and a quality installation.

“This isn’t just another construction project or roof for us, it’s our passion,” said McGrew. “Each dome or copper roof is very different and RSS has the expertise to understand the natural tendencies of the material and the experience to adjust our fabrication to accommodate last-minute design changes without delay.”

Guided by principles of their corporate safety program, called the Legacy Safety League, the team of expert sheet metal installers and management discuss the challenges of the installation and took preventative safety measures to ensure that every crew member was safe throughout the project. One such challenge involved the sheer slope of the project; while each installer was tied off in a harness, once he could no longer stand safely, installers repelled down the dome to lay the interlocking flat seam panels.

Belmont University is seeking a Silver LEED® certification for the building based on numerous conservation measures. Beyond natural beautification, a copper roof was chosen based on its resistance to the elements and its ability to perform well beyond 100 years. Unlike other metal roofing materials, copper requires no painting or finishing and it’s an easy material to form over irregular roof structures. When properly designed and installed, a copper roof provides an economical, long-term roofing solution with low life cycle costs attributable to the low maintenance, long life and salvage value of copper.

The Baskin Center contains more than a dozen classrooms, trial and appellate courtrooms, a two-story library and more than 20 faculty offices.
