Collaboration brings awareness to Sensory Processing Disorder and the importance of therapy in natural settings

We are thrilled that Landscape Structures is working with us to provide outdoor treatment options for children with Sensory Processing Disorder and other sensory challenges.

Landscape Structures Inc., a Delano, Minn.-based commercial playground equipment manufacturer, announced today that it has begun collaborating with the Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation (SPD Foundation), the world leader in research, education and advocacy for Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), a neurological condition that disrupts the daily lives of many adults and 5 to 10 percent of all children. The collaboration also includes the STAR (Sensory Therapies And Research) Center, the premier clinic for treatment of SPD and sister organization to the SPD Foundation.

The SPD Foundation (SPDFoundation.net) conducts research into SPD and offers online courses, national and international symposiums and advanced mentorships for parents, therapists, educators and physicians. Through these educational opportunities, professionals learn from SPD experts, including founder of the SPD Foundation and STAR Center, Lucy Jane Miller, Ph.D., OTR.

The STAR Center (SPDStar.org), located in Greenwood Village, Colo., focuses on improving developmental abilities, self-esteem, social interaction and self-regulation of children through engagement and sensory-based occupational therapy. The new collaboration with Landscape Structures has led to the creation of a world-class sensory playground at STAR Center, moving occupational therapy outdoors.

Because children use playgrounds to play, learn and socialize, an inclusive playground becomes a natural setting in which to hold treatment sessions. The state-of-the-art playground equipment at the STAR Center, provided by Landscape Structures, offers children a variety of sensory and engagement-based play experiences.

“We’re excited to partner with the SPD Foundation in order to advocate and bring further awareness to those experiencing Sensory Processing Disorder,” said Pat Faust, president of Landscape Structures. “Playgrounds are an important part of children’s lives; it’s great that the STAR Center is using their inclusive playground as a therapy tool and incorporating this ‘natural’ setting into the daily lives of children with SPD.”

“We are thrilled that Landscape Structures is working with us to provide outdoor treatment options for children with Sensory Processing Disorder and other sensory challenges,” said Dr. Miller. “This outdoor sensory playground has been part of our vision and dreams for the STAR Center for decades. We’re really looking forward to seeing how the playground equipment increases social participation in the children we treat.”

In addition to providing treatment for children with SPD, the STAR Center focuses on parent education. By helping parents understand SPD and intervention principles, treatment is successful and can be reflected in daily life routines. The STAR Center coaches parents to prepare for their child’s sensory needs and helps families reframe their child’s problems as physiological rather than behavioral, facilitating a “sensory lifestyle” for the whole family.

In January 2010, Landscape Structures introduced a revolutionary playground design solution to bring new sensory play experiences to playgrounds at elementary schools, childcare centers and city parks, and establish new standards for inclusive playgrounds worldwide. As part of focusing on creating truly inclusive playgrounds, Landscape Structures has introduced a suite of sensory play products that provide rich tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular, visual and auditory experiences, and help develop motor-planning skills and social/imaginative play behaviors. In addition, the company’s playground designers developed a design philosophy that addresses the environment, the play experience and variability to guide all of its inclusive playground designs.

Since 1971, Landscape Structures Inc. has been the leading commercial playground equipment manufacturer in the world. The employee-owned company is committed to making the world a better place with active children thriving in leading communities year after year, generation after generation. Landscape Structures encourages outdoor play that develops healthy kids and a sustainable world by creating innovative products that are environmentally responsible. The company’s mission from day one has been to enhance children’s lives by fostering and creating inspiring play experiences while honoring the environment.
