Muskogee, OK (PRWEB) August 28, 2012
Teens in Muskogee will now have a trendy new shopping destination inside the Arrowhead Mall with the grand opening of the city’s newest teen retail store, RockItz. This is thanks to returning veteran 1st Sgt. Ken Scott who had set out on a new mission to run his own store and made it happen.
Like many veterans, Ken Scott came home from the Gulf War wondering what he was going to do after leaving the Army. He knew he wanted to own his own business and not just end up as an employee somewhere. He searched through many different franchise opportunities on the internet and found that he felt uncomfortable walking into a business where he had to pay a high entry price and then was responsible for paying monthly fees and royalties for the life of the business.
Ken decided it was best to look for independent business opportunities. He came across a website for a company called Discount Retail Store Services and looked deeper. They had a lot to offer in terms of business development assistance, support and services and offered six different varieties of independent businesses to choose from. Ken was most interested in the Teen Store concept and filled out the form on their website. Within the first couple of days he was in contact with a national business development director, financial advisors and a real estate team that started looking at all the options in his area.
The company helped Ken open his store with 0% financing, 4 months of free rent, and money for operating expenses for the first year. A complete interior renovation was also negotiated in the lease agreement at no cost. In addition to 8 weeks of comprehensive training that Ken completed over the phone, his staff went through a hands-on store-owner “boot camp” spending a week on everything from stocking merchandise to sales and running the POS system at the cash counter.
RockItz was designed from the beginning to attract attention and built entirely by the build-out specialists at Discount Retail Store Services. The store is loaded with POP Culture and features a spacious shopping area with an easy to explore layout featuring a high-energy vibe to go with its high ceilings, contemporary fixtures and cool products.
When asked about what the reaction has been to the store so far, Ken and his wife Barb commented, “The reaction to the store has been great. My favorite response was when a teenager walked in and said; ‘Wow I haven’t seen one of these stores yet!’ He thought RockItz was a big box retailer like Spencer’s or Hot Topic and not a ‘mom and pop’ independent store…“
It was ready to open in only 4 days. They started with an empty vanilla shell on a Tuesday morning and by Saturday Ken had his grand opening featuring a live rock band.
“They showed us how to do all the merchandising, everything! They came in on a Tuesday morning and Saturday morning we opened the doors and we were open for business in our beautiful store. They built the fixtures they inventoried everything, put it in the POS system, put the product on the shelves, and priced all the products, everything… The only thing I had to do was flip a switch and start selling. Now we have been in business for over 2 months and I’m really looking forward to my family’s future –this was well worth the effort.”
Walking past the entrance of the store, mall goers are greeted by the incredible 8-bit art of the trend-savvy POP artist “E-Boy” whose retro 8-bit video game styled design exemplifies the essence of the teen culture. All the products found at RockItz are handpicked for the fun, casual teen lifestyle creating the ideal atmosphere for teenagers. “Our price points are below anybody else’s in the mall. A kid can afford anything in here without taking out a loan from their parents.” said Barb Scott.
After two and a half months Ken’s store is doing fantastic business. You can see Ken Scott’s Youtube Interview Here.
