A person has to realize they have a need as the first step toward meeting it”, says Barry Birkett of Senior Care Corner, “so we’re opening the eyes of family caregivers to help them see their own needs and take that step.

"You Might Be a Family Caregiver - The Video" is a new YouTube release from Senior Care Corner for family caregivers, provide essential and at times lifesaving care that saves the health care system billions. Rather than being paid, meeting the needs of family members carries a cost for these caregivers, who pay a price physically, emotionally and often financially. Senior Care Corner produced the video to educate and inform those who don't recognize themselves as caregivers and thus don't take action to address the toll it takes.
"You Might Be a Family Caregiver - The Video" grew out of an enthusiastically-received Senior Care Corner podcast, in which they gave examples of situations in which family caregivers might find themselves presented in the style of a popular comedy routine, Kathy and Barry Birkett, Senior Care Corner’s Co-Founders, took the concept to video to reach and help even more people who give of themselves to parents, grandparents and other aging family members without realizing they are overlooking their own needs in doing so.
“It was gratifying to hear that we helped people identify themselves as family caregivers with the podcast”, says Barry Birkett, “so we decided to use the reach of YouTube to encourage even more to seek support in meeting their own needs along with those of their senior loved ones.”
‘You Might Be a Family Caregiver: The Video’ adds many examples to the list from the podcast, different actions caregivers may take on behalf of aging family members to make their lives safer, healthier or simply more enjoyable. The examples are everyday tasks for the most part, so the caregivers often don’t see themselves as such.
“A person has to realize they have a need as the first step toward meeting it”, according to Birkett, “so we’re opening the eyes of caregivers to help them see their own needs and take that first step.”
Whether a teen helping out grandparents, an empty-nester providing care to elder loved ones or a parent in the middle of the triple decker sandwich, raising children while caring for aging parents, one seeing him or herself in the video “just might be a family caregiver.”
