Author Kimberly Foster’s new young adult novel “The Clover Tree” (published by Balboa Press) mixes fast-paced, realistic teen situations with metaphor to teach life skills as her character travels through junior high and high school.
“The Clover Tree” features Kate Malone, a 13-year-old with a magical clover field. While she has all the identifiable traits of a teen: an annoying sister, soccer tryouts, lunchtime gossip and coveted Uggs, not every 13-year-old-has access to clovers that grant wishes.
An excerpt from “The Clover Tree”:
At our end of the table, Carly’s upcoming sleepover is the hot topic. I guess I’ll figure out Devyn’s allure this weekend since Carly invited her too. Apparently, Devyn gets invited to everything. I’m still not sure if that’s because she’s fun or if it’s some sort of unwritten diva rule. Curiosity aside, I’m feeling pretty good about getting an invite. I really want to be accepted; and, I have an idea.
In age appropriate and timely storytelling, “The Clover Tree” introduces empowering concepts, like manifesting, visualization and self‐love. Foster describes it as “… a Dr. Wayne Dyer twist on Dorothy’s adventure in ‘The Wizard of Oz.’”
Kate’s journey reveals the challenges of adolescence, primarily Kate’s intense desire, like most teens, to fit in. Like Dorothy and her ruby slippers, Kate has an ally in the clover tree, but is it truly magical? Or is it possible she has the power? Ultimately, Kate learns the truth about her part in manifesting her dreams.
