A scientific study comparing Vidisco Digital Radiography X-ray to D7 fast film has yielded surprising, unprecedented results: Vidisco’s Digital Radiography has been proven to be 30-60 times more sensitive than D7 fast film and it penetrates over 3-6 times more than D7 fast film.

The inevitable question arises: Why use film for X-ray purposes, when even the fastest film has so little to offer in comparison to the outstanding performance of Vidisco’s Digital X-ray?

The enlightening comparison study was recently conducted by Vidisco Ltd., the world’s leading producer of portable digital X-ray systems, between D7 film and Digital Radiography. The aim was to examine the sensitivity level of Vidisco DDA panels to dose in comparison to D7 film, when using various thicknesses of steel (Fe).

Every effort was made to ensure that the parameters of comparison were identical. The Source Detector Distance (SDD) in Vidisco’s test was 70cm (700mm), which is identical to the declared SFD in the film testing. Data regarding film was acquired from the Eresco Controller. According to this, the test was conducted using fast Film D7 and the required density level was 2. A density reading of 2.0 is the result of only one percent of the incident light making it through the film. The study introduced a parallel parameter in DR: The saturation level was set at 99%.

The criteria being tested were the relative dose and penetration when using different energy levels. To achieve this data, the study used various energy levels, starting at 80 kV up to 200 kV, at 20 kV intervals.

The tests unequivocally proved that from the aspect of time, Vidisco’s DR is 30 to 60 times more sensitive than fast film (D7)! From the aspect of penetration for the same kV and dose, Vidisco DR penetrates over 3 - 6 times more than D7 (fast) film!

Adar Yiron, Vidisco’s VP Marketing, stated: “Vidisco takes pride in the unrivalled performance of its cutting-edge array of DDA flat panel imagers. This study proves unequivocally that Vidisco’s flat panels are many times more sensitive than fast film from the point of view of time, and that they are capable of far greater penetration than fast film. When it comes to NDT and Security X-ray inspections, Vidisco’s DR panels provide unsurpassed performance which is far beyond the capabilities of film. The added factor of a significantly reduced dose greatly enhances the operator’s safety. ”
