Hospice & Palliative Care of Westchester (HPCW) this year is proud to be celebrating its 20th Anniversary of providing hospice services to patients and families throughout the Westchester County community.

Hospice of Westchester was established in 1992, when Visiting Nurse Services in Westchester and White Plains Hospital Center collaborated to provide comprehensive, end-of-life care to Westchester County residents. Ten years later, when Hospice of Westchester began to offer palliative care services in addition to its hospice services, the name was changed to Hospice & Palliative Care of Westchester.

HPCW’s dedication to the Westchester community over the last two decades includes the provision of services that address the medical, physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of its patients. From a grassroots staff of twenty in 1992, the organization today boasts a team of sixty-five staff members, which includes a medical director, registered nurses, licensed social workers, spiritual counselors, bereavement counselors and certified home health aides in addition to other departments including human resources, finance, development and public affairs, a community relations liaison and administrative support. HPCW also has a very active volunteer program. The team of more than fifty specially trained volunteers augments the organization’s professional staff.

HPCW was the first hospice organization in Westchester to establish a Complementary Care Program. This program provides a variety of therapies at no cost to patients and includes massage, music and art therapies, acupuncture, reflexology and reiki. The Complementary Care Program was introduced in 2000 as part of HPCW’s commitment to increasing the well-being and improving the quality of life of its patients.

HPCW has been considered the “Hospice of Choice” in the Westchester community since 2009, serving more patients daily than any other end of life care organization in Westchester. HPCW provides its services to approximately 120 patients per day. These services are offered to patients at little or no cost, wherever they reside; a private residence, assisted living facilities or skilled nursing facilities.

“Our mission is to provide extraordinary and dignified comfort, care and compassion to every individual and family facing a serious or life-threatening illness,” said Mary K. Spengler, MS, Executive Director, HPCW. “We look forward to continuing our role as a vital part of the vibrant health care community. I am proud of our past accomplishments and confident about our future.”

As part of this celebratory year, Hospice & Palliative Care of Westchester will host its 20th Anniversary In Celebration Gala Cocktail Reception. This year’s honoree is Maple Medical, LLP, and HPCW will pay a special tribute to Anna L. Shereff. All former In Celebration honorees will be recognized for their continued support.
