The Doe Run Company recently received the Grand Award for Publication Excellence (APEX) from The Business Communications Report in the small office category for its “Leading Change” sustainability report, published in 2011. Doe Run’s winning report was selected among nearly 3,400 entries submitted for this year’s APEX competition.

Based on Doe Run’s commitment to sustainability, the report applies the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Guidelines, as the basis for content. GRI’s framework is designed to help organizations measure, benchmark and report environmental, economic and social performance, with the goal of encouraging transparent and balanced disclosure of information that matters most to an organization’s audiences.

According to APEX judges, “This impressive sustainability report offers a very appealing layout, with superb infographics that clearly demonstrate a very complex manufacturing process. Copy is not overlooked, with an interesting, crisply written and thorough presentation of the company's sustainability work.”

This award marks the sixth time Doe Run has been recognized by APEX for company reporting efforts. The GRI report highlights how Doe Run, as the largest integrated lead producer in the Western Hemisphere, delivers against its environmental, social and economic responsibilities. The report showcases Doe Run’s environmental efforts and improvements, workforce education, safety initiatives and community support.

“Doe Run recognizes its impact on stakeholders and the communities in which we operate,” said Jerry Pyatt, chief executive officer at Doe Run. “One way Doe Run holds itself accountable is through self-reporting and sharing our efforts to operate sustainably. We strive to maintain ongoing communications with stakeholders both inside and outside the company – and this report is an important part of that process.”

Doe Run is currently developing its third GRI report. Each of Doe Run’s GRI reports is available for viewing online at http://sustainability.doerun.com/.
