Mohawk College’s Mobile and Electronic Health Development and Innovation Centre (MEDIC) received $800,000 in funding from the province of Ontario. Combined with the same amount in federal funding and additional investments on the part of the college and its industry partners, MEDIC has become a multi-million dollar research initiative.

MEDIC’s mission is to bring students, professors and industry leaders together to design and develop innovative healthcare technology. Each semester, Mohawk will place 25 Engineering Technology students into co-op work placement positions at MEDIC, allowing students to work closely with industry professionals and Mohawk professors.

“This new centre is going to immerse our students in a culture of innovation and help inspire a spirit of entrepreneurship,” says Rob MacIsaac, President of Mohawk College. “Those students are going to tackle problems and create solutions at the leading edge of the intersection of health and technology."

Mohawk College currently offers dozens of healthcare and technology programs in both their full-time programs and continuing education streams. Having a research centre like MEDIC will only further advance the college as a leader in industry innovation and development.

The purpose of the research done at MEDIC is to create applications and programs that can be used in actual healthcare settings in order to simplify the use of and access to patient information.

“MEDIC is designed to improve the efficiency of the delivery of [health]care,” says Duane Bender, Professor of Software Engineering Technology and Principal Researcher in eHealth and mHealth at the Mohawk Applied Research Centre. “The accuracy of information through using electronic means is one of the goals, but also to provide both patients and practitioners the right information at the right time to make the right decisions.”

Scheduled to open in June 2013, MEDIC’s new 2,000 square-foot facility will be located in the School of Engineering Technology at Mohawk’s Fennel Campus in Hamilton, Ontario.
