Recognizing the potential of the Coast2Coast Rx program and its ability to help constituents and save tax payer dollars, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors voted to approve the program last year.

Coast2Coast Rx and the Yolo County Health Department announced today that residents have collectively saved more than $157,097 on prescriptions since the discount card was adopted in August 2011. This milestone achievement, marked by the one-year anniversary of the discount prescription program, highlights the dual benefits of the card: it saves consumers money while generating revenue for important public health programs. For each prescription filled, the county receives $1.25—a feature that sets this discount program apart from the rest.

Coast2Coast Rx is a no-cost, comprehensive program for savings on thousands of prescriptions and additional health services. Everyone is immediately eligible to use the plan as there are no restrictions on age, health status or income. With no membership paperwork required, residents can simply pick up a card from locations around the county or download and print a card from the Coast2Coast website.

Recognizing the potential of the Coast2Coast Rx program and its ability to help constituents and save tax payer dollars, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors voted to approve the program last year. As Yolo County Supervisor and current California State Association of Counties (CSAC) President Mike McGowan explained, “The card is endorsed by the Boards of Supervisors in 25 counties throughout California and by CSAC because it is free, it offers greater usage rates and discounts for constituents than other programs, it does not add additional administrative work for county employees and the funds generated can help serve public health programs.”

The Yolo County Health Department has made the card available to residents through     community-based organizations and county offices. Royalties from the program have been allocated to serve the healthcare needs of Yolo County’s indigent population.

“We are pleased to participate in the Coast2Coast Rx card program which helps in multiple ways, benefitting our uninsured and underinsured, as well as all county residents,” said Yolo County Health Director Jill Cook.

With the Coast2Coast Rx card, consumers have benefitted from savings of 10, 25 or even up to 75 percent on their prescriptions, with an average nationwide savings of 55 percent in 2011. For those facing the expense of needed prescriptions without the benefit of insurance, insufficient coverage or high deductibles under a current plan, the card can be a significant cost-saver, and in some cases, can be used to offset the gap in coverage that Medicare Part D patients sometimes experience. Discounts on certain dental, vision, hearing, lab services, diabetes supplies, and even pet prescriptions and veterinary services, are available using the same card through partner programs. More than 59,000 pharmacies nationwide accept the card, including major chains and many independent establishments.

To increase awareness and use of the card, Coast2Coast Rx continues to develop outreach efforts to public departments and local nonprofit agencies. Organizations providing social services to underserved populations are encouraged to distribute the card to their constituents as a money-saving resource. Local business owners are also encouraged to make the card available to their employees to help supplement any company-provided healthcare plans or to assist employees who do not qualify for coverage.

“The Coast2Coast Rx card program is an excellent resource for consumers who are uninsured, underinsured or whose needs are not met by their current plan,” said Chief Marketing Officer Marty Dettelbach of Financial Marketing Concepts, Inc., the company that provides the discount prescription card. “The discounts can be significant so we encourage consumers to compare the costs of their families’ prescriptions to see how much they could be saving by using the Coast2Coast Rx card.”

Yolo County residents can pick up cards at county offices or download and print their cards at http://www.coast2coastrx.com/yolo/for immediate savings. Follow the program on Facebook and Twitter for updates and general health care news.
