Keeping it in the family is what Select Van & Storage has done best for over 50 years. From its meager beginnings in Omaha, Neb. in 1936 as Select Delivery to one of the largest agents for Mayflower in 2012 as Select Van & Storage, the Smith family is rapidly increasing in the number of locations to branch outside of the Midwest and into California and Texas.

Select Delivery began with a single moving truck, smaller in size than the actual family of the owner, Jim Smith, who had a total of five children. The moving business began to grow, and Jim wanted to grow with it. Between 1985 and 1991, two of Jim's sons purchased the company from their father. The main reason William, one of the brothers, wanted to go into the moving business was because of the diversity it offered.

"I went to school for accounting at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and during my internship I could barely keep my eyes open," said a chuckling William, co-owner of Select Van & Storage. "This is not the case in the moving industry, there is something different every day in the moving world."

In fact, William's daughter, Regan has played a big part in the differences of day-to-day moving strategies. She got Select Van & Storage involved in the following "green" initiatives:

  •     SmartWay Program, EPA initiated partnership to accelerate the deployment of fuel efficient technologies for heavy duty vehicles
  •     Support Sponsor for WasteCap Nebraska, which assists businesses to develop and adopt green practices

Select Van & Storage also was named the Most Sustainable Business in Nebraska in 2010 when compared with other Omaha moving companies. Contributing to this title are the plastic boxes the company uses to move office and industrial clients, cutting back on hundreds of pounds of cardboard waste.

Along with "green" initiatives comes the drive from this company to constantly provide better customer service and better availability for potential customers to reach Select Van & Storage. Six new websites have been launched for each of the locations in Omaha and Lincoln, Neb.; Des Moines, Iowa; Kansas City, Mo., Dallas, Texas and San Francisco, Calif.

"We constantly believe in improvement," William said. "Each day we have a 30 minute meeting where we discuss how we can do things better the next day."
