Recovery Wellness Rooms Open for Democratic National Convention Attendees
Multiple Venues Tailored for People in Recovery from Addiction, Mental Illness: Sponsored by Faces & Voices of Recovery and The Coalition for Whole Health.
Faces & Voices of Recovery and The Coalition for Whole Health again are sponsoring Recovery Wellness Rooms for delegates, staff and other guests attending the Democratic National Convention from Monday September 3 through Thursday September 6 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Recovery Wellness Rooms, staffed by volunteers from the sponsoring organizations, provide alcohol-free venues for relaxation, peer-support meetings and access to recovery-related materials. To kick off Convention activities on Tuesday, the Recovery Caucus Meeting will be held in one of the Rooms. Sponsors from more than 70 addiction and mental health recovery organizations provide broad-based support for the Rooms.
“In response to the enthusiastic welcome our Recovery Wellness Room received at the 2008 Democratic Convention, we and our co-sponsors wanted again to provide people in recovery with a special haven at this year’s gathering,” said Pat Taylor, Executive Director of Faces & Voices of Recovery and a sponsor of the Recovery Wellness Rooms. “We want to thank the 2012 DNC for its tremendous support of our efforts. People in recovery can face particular challenges from the hectic pace, stress and ubiquitous presence of alcohol at a national political convention. This year’s Rooms provide safe, congenial places for them and their guests to gather, network with others and attend ‘12-step’-type meetings, if they so desire.”
For four days from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in Convention Center Room # 214, guests are offered:
- Daily “12-step”-type meetings at 10:00 am, 12:00 noon, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm
- The opportunity to connect with others who are in recovery to create a recovery support network
- Access to recovery resources
- Refreshments in a quiet space.
Recovery Caucus Meeting: All people in recovery, their family members, friends and allies are invited to participate in the Recovery Caucus Meeting on Tuesday, September 4 at 2:00 pm. Held in Convention Center Room #214, the meeting will feature remarks from former Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy, David Wellstone, Jr. and others who will speak about the fundamental importance of recovery support to the health of our nation.
Additional evening venues: In addition to the main Recovery Wellness Room, two additional “recovery friendly” spaces are reserved for delegates and their guests to mingle in the evenings. On Tuesday and Wednesday, guests are welcome in the Interactive Zone of the Upper Concourse of the Arena from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and on Thursday they are invited to the 400 level of the Stadium across from Suites 411C and 412A, again from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Patrick Kennedy, former Democratic Congressman from Rhode Island, said “Despite the fact that many millions of Americans have struggled with addiction or mental illness, the importance of recovery has long been neglected in the political sphere. Our political parties must change the way they approach this grave public health crisis, and I applaud the DNC for partnering with the Recovery Wellness Room sponsors at this 2012 convention.”
Jim Ramstad, former Republican Congressman from Minnesota, noted, “It’s very important to support people in recovery from addiction and mental illness who are participating in our nation’s political process. Recovery wellness rooms are one way that we can do that.”
Nearly every American family has been touched by addiction or mental illness in some way, making robust support for people in recovery a national health priority. Faces & Voices of Recovery and The Coalition for Whole Health support public and private policies that promote mental health and addiction recovery as integral to overall health, and endorse research, prevention, early intervention and treatment as essential investments in America’s future.
