Having a seasoned PR professional as a mentor makes it easier for students to transition to the working world and gives them a valuable contact as they advance in their field.
Sunnyvale, Calif. (PRWEB) August 31, 2012
Based on the success of the Mentorship Program it launched last September for members of the San Jose State University Pearce Davies Alpha Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), the Silicon Valley Chapter of PRSA will expand the program for the 2012-2013 Academic Year. Currently, 15 students and alumni have been matched with PR professionals who serve as their mentors. This year, the program hopes to double the number of mentorships and launch a Young Professionals Group for mentees who graduated in June.
Mentorship Committee Chair and c3PR Public Relations and Marketing Founder and Principal Mar Junge will speak about the benefits of mentorship on September 5, 2012 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at SJSU Dwight Bentel Hall, Room 225. At the free event, Junior- and Senior-year students will have the opportunity to sign up to be matched with a PR mentor. Interested students can register at http://www.facebook.com/events/376763152397621/.
“I’m impressed with the high caliber of these students. They demonstrate more professionalism and knowledge of good PR practices than I did when I was a PR major at SJSU in the 1970’s,” Junge said. “So far there are 25 students registered to attend the meeting, which is more than double the number of students who attended our kick off meeting last year. Word must be spreading that having a seasoned PR professional as a mentor makes it easier for students to transition to the working world and gives them a valuable contact as they advance in their field.”
In addition to expanding the program, the PRSA-SV Mentorship Committee will utilize the experience and advice of Gerald Corbett, APR, Fellow, Chair and CEO of the 32,000-member Public Relations Society of America and CEO of the Strategic Communications Consulting Firm Redphlag LLC. Corbett is also an adjunct PR professor in the Journalism and Mass Communications Department of the College of Arts and Sciences at SJSU, authors the PR Job Coach Career Management & Mentoring Blog, and has personally mentored more than 300 young professionals.
