Tough Economy Benefits Certain Types of Businesses

Bankruptcy attorneys, storage container rentals, and security guard services all experiencing increased demand, says Out-Back Storage, Industrial Security, and attorney David Hathaway.

The economic difficulties faced by Americans have severely impacted many businesses, particularly mortgage origination and construction. For some businesses however, the downturn has been a boon, driving demand for certain products and services higher.

Out-Back Storage of Westerly, Rhode Island, has seen rentals of storage containers soar. “Although rental of storage containers for use on construction job sites is down, that’s been more than made up for by the number of foreclosures occurring”, says Keith Tremblay, the owner of Out-Back Storage. “Foreclosures drive rentals of storage containers by consumers, who often need a place to temporarily store their belongings while they sort their situation out.” As one might expect, bankruptcy attorneys are also having a field day. “Keeping up with the constant influx of new clients is a challenge” says Attorney David Hathaway of Exeter, RI. “Not everyone we work with ends up filing for Bankruptcy, but we help them think through their options – often the family home is at stake, and sadly we’ve been getting an extraordinary number of clients in situations like that.”

The downturn and high unemployment rate has turned large numbers of homeowners back into renters. As a result, some services catering to landlords are experiencing strong growth. Industrial Security, which provides security guard services for apartment complexes, has seen a substantial increase in inquiries from landlords. “With high unemployment leading in some cases to increased crime, many landlords are wanting to limit real risk to tenants, and their own exposure to liability, as well as to ensure the condition of their building is maintained. Providing a safe, professional environment with security guard services can also be a justification for higher rental rates.”

Eventually, when the economy recovers, bankruptcy attorneys, container storage rental personnel, and security guards may be able to take well-deserved breaks, but for the foreseeable future, business will continue to boom for these types of businesses.
