Aquafix’s SunZilla Battles Pesky Parrotfeather in Northern Georgia Pond

In three short weeks, a debut product from Aquafix, SunZilla, obliterates stubborn Parrotfeather milfoil weeds (Myriophyllum Aquaticum), boosted by aquatic herbicides.

When Parrotfeather broke out in a private pond this August, blanketing the water with dense mats of weeds reaching four feet out from the shoreline, Aquafix's SunZilla ( sank the plants fast by giving them a sunburn.

“The shocking thing to me was that we normally don’t get good decomposition of the root system with foliar spraying,” said Aquafix customer and aquatic biologist Mike H. of Ball Ground, Georgia, who mixed PondZilla with Diquat, Komeen*, and a surfactant to get these results. “We normally have to use a 2-4, D granular for that, but the roots were not found. It took three weeks from the time we sprayed for this to clear. That is fast!”

SunZilla is an innovative product from Aquafix’s Naturalake line ( Parrotfeather's waxy foliage makes it difficult for traditional herbicides to control it, but SunZilla in effect gives it a sunburn, robbing the plant of buoyancy and sinking it. SunZilla is a biodegradable, DEA-free micro-emulsion of essential oils and wetting agents. It magnifies the effects of UV radiation on the protective cuticle of the leaf. As the leaf cuticle breaks down, the plant starts to sink and naturally decompose. SunZilla is hard-water stable, non-phenolic, and safe for the user and the environment when used at label rates.

Parrotfeather colonizes stubbornly in ponds and shallow lakes, much to the chagrin of boaters, water skiers, and swimmers. In rivers it threatens to block passage of salmon and can degrade water quality. In addition to Parrotfeather, SunZilla has proven to sink other floating plants with waxy cuticles like Duckweed, Azolla (Mosquito Fern), Oscillatoria, and Lyngbya.

Team Aquafix ( is dedicated to solving the most noxious pond problems–algae choking off aquatic life, nauseating stenches, or gobs of sludge–by treating a pond’s underlying problems, not the symptoms they trigger.
