The perception that a retail job is just a waypoint on the road to a 'real' job is misleading. We've trained close to a million people worldwide and you'd be surprised how many salespeople and managers are earning $50,000 to $150,000 a year or more.

At a time when jobs are very hard to come by, one retail training company is doing something about it. The Friedman Group, led by international retail authority Harry J. Friedman, is offering 1,000 free job training scholarships, valued at $250,000, to anyone who wants to learn professional sales and customer service skills that will help them land retail jobs. For those already working in retail the training can provide a way to improve their earning potential.
The first 1,000 people who respond to http://www.TheFriedmanGroup.com/scholarship, will be eligible to receive a free online eLearning course called Gold Star Selling, the most widely used retail sales training system in the world. The self-paced, comprehensive course will be available on-demand 24/7, at FriedmanLearning.com.
“The public’s perception of a retail job is often that it’s a waypoint on the road to a ‘better’ job, especially among those in the Gen Y group,” says Friedman, the author of retail’s best selling book, No Thanks, I’m Just Looking. “Retailers as a whole have traditionally not invested heavily in training their people. For many, it’s been easier to run another sale, than to train and pay their staff for their productivity. That’s finally changing. With the growing trend of ‘showrooming’ – where consumers shop retail stores to touch and feel, but buy on the Internet, retailers have to find an advantage other than price and selection.
“That advantage is a well-trained sales associate who knows how to properly serve customers and make shopping a fun adventure that brings people back again and again. A great brick-and-mortar customer experience can trump the Internet, all day long.”
A recent study by Gen Y research firm, Millennial Branding, and PayScale, a company that collects compensation data, cited retail as the most common job held by Gen Y Millennials coming out of college, because of the tight job market. The average annual pay for retail sales associates is reportedly just under $20,000.
“That snapshot is not the whole story,” says Friedman. “Gen Y or any generation sales associate can earn a good living in retail, if they’re trained correctly and paid based on productivity. We’ve trained close to a million people worldwide, and you’d be surprised how many salespeople and managers are earning $50,000 to $150,000 a year or more.”
Friedman’s passion for retail is well known in the industry and has made him one of its most sought after consultants. “Since 1980 we’ve focused on how to make retailers more successful,” says Friedman, whose retail consulting and training organization has offices in 12 countries. “It’s time to give something back. With unemployment where it is, we believe this course will enable people to get a job that they can enjoy and be very good at. Retail can be a very rewarding career with more opportunities for advancement than most people are aware of. We’d like to help provide people with the skill sets to take advantage of those opportunities.”
