cherishing some passages in the Bible while totally ignoring or even demeaning other passages.

In his new book “The Church Fractured: A Fresh Call to Unity” (published by WestBow Press), Finis Cavender examines the commonalities between Christian denominations in an attempt to put debates on doctrines aside in order to focus on unity.
According to Cavender, much of the division within Christendom is the result of religious leaders “… cherishing some passages in the Bible while totally ignoring or even demeaning other passages.” In “The Church Fractured,” Cavender suggests four things to move Christians toward unity: renewed reverence for the Bible as God’s word; agreement on basic truths of the New Testament; prayer and commitment to unity; and love for one another instead of the current peaceful coexistence. The book also contains a detailed discussion of the conversion process.
An excerpt from “The Church Fractured”:
“In the twenty centuries since Jesus walked on the Earth, we have divided and divided again. Should any of us have reason to hope for eternal life? We have focused on differences so long that all we see are the differences! If we can unite on a few basic truths of the New Testament, we will be considerably closer to the unity for which Jesus prayed.”
Cavender is not asking churches to give up their doctrines, simply that we agree on a few basic truths. I am not asking for compromise, rather I am seeking renewed reverence for the Bible, love for one another, and unity based on New Testament truths. Frankly, if we do not unite, we may find that when Christ comes again, we will have joined the rich man in the lake of fire looking across the chasm at Lazarus and the rest of the sheep.
